Michigan Fly Fishing

Michigan has hundreds of miles of rivers and thousands of lakes that are ideal for fly fishing. Michigan's upper peninsula has many miles of pristine streams and rivers that are perfect for fly fishing for trout and steelhead.

fly fishing pictureThere are a lot of different waters in Michigan's upper peninsula that is very good for fly fishing for small mouth bass. Michigan's lower peninsula hosts a great many rivers, streams and lakes that are very good for fly fishing. Some of the rivers are the famous Au Sable and the Manistee rivers. There are also many small streams for fly fishing.

There are lakes, from small to large, all over Michigan that are good for fly fishing. Some of the rivers and streams are designated fly fishing only and no kill or catch and release. In the spring a good number of fishermen fish for blue gills with flys. They also fish for steelhead that go up stream from the big lakes to spawn. The fly fishing is very good all summer long because of the Large Fly hatches and some special times are when the large caddis flys hatch. This is a good time for brown Trout Fly fishing. Fly fishing has been around for thousands of years.

The basic idea is to present something to the fish that imitates or mimics the food that they eat such as bugs, flys or something that lives in the water or some thing that has fallen into the water. Most flys are constructed using string, feathers, yarn, fur, quills, leather, and other things tied or constructed onto a fish hook to imitate or mimic what fish would consider food.

The basic equipment is a Fly Rod, Fly Reel, Fly Line and leader or tippit. The rod is used to cast the fly line and on the end of the fly line is a six to nine foot leader or tippit. The leader or tippit is usually of nylon or flora carbon Fishing Line that makes it hard for the fish to see the fly line. The fly is tied onto the end of the tippit. It takes some practice to cast the fly line, leader and fly onto the water in a way as to make it look natural. With a little practice you can get good at it and be able able to fool the fish into thinking the artificial fly is real food. Go out to a river or lake and give it a try. Even if you don't catch any thing it will be nice to be in the beautiful out doors.
